A Saintsman's Prayer (For Parents)

We were at a cocktail reception yesterday for freshman parents and were handed this prayer. I am sharing it because it really hits close to home. While it refers to "son", I am sure that those who have daughters can also relate. Here is the prayer written by a former Principal of Saint Augustine High School, Fr. John Sanders, O.S.A. '66.

Dear God,
Thank you for the gift of my son, and for the privilege of raising him. Send me the patience to listen to him, and the perseverance to support him when he is in need.

Show me the way to love him without smothering him, confront him without destroying his spirit, and encourage him without creating false hope.

Let me know when to come to his aid, and send me the wisdom to pull back and let him discover lessons on his own. Help me to teach him about You and Your Son, so that he will love You and trust in You, as I do.

Grant me freedom from daily frustrations, and remind me that a good sense of humor is a gift from you. Bestow on me the ability to forgive and be forgiven, and to understand that my role is to set my son free and to cherish the years we have together. Amen.
