I was having a conversation with someone who I am now ashamed to admit, is a relative. It started pleasantly enough with some catching up. It took a wrong turn when she mentioned that she went to watch "The A-Team", and that since she was already in the movie theater; she felt she was entitled to go into the next theater to watch "Robinhood". The only thing that stopped her was the fact that there were only four people watching the movie and she would have been very conspicuous. Her next words were "I would been embarrassed had I gotten caught."
I was horrified, and because I could not believe that I was hearing this from a supposedly devout Catholic, I asked her if she was one of those who paid for one movie and watched two or more. She replied with "Well, everyone does it." I countered with "Just because everyone does it, does not mean it is right." She dismissed me with an "I live alone so I do not have to take the moral high ground." I guess she does not have to live with herself.
I recently read a post on someone's Facebook wall that wrong is still wrong even if everyone else is doing it, and right is still right even if you are the only one doing it. I totally agree; however, it is never easy to go against the tide of popular opinion. Most of the time I can only be totally honest with family and even then, there is so much resentment that you wonder if it is worth it. Like anyone else, I have my share of faults, honesty being one of them, but I do draw the line at theft. The bottom line is I do have to live with myself.
