King of Our World

There is a 6-year old child at church who shall remain unnamed. He sings at the top of his lungs, he cannot sit still, he bawls when he does not get his way, and when it is time for "peace be with you", he goes through each pew to shake hands until someone sends him back to his mother. On the upside, he has the sweetest smile for everyone and he kisses his mother all the time. This same child goes to the summer camp where Jason is a Junior Recreational Leader. Jason is thankful that this child is not directly under his supervision because this child thinks everything revolves around him despite the fact that he is not an only child. He often wears a shirt that has a sign that says "blame it on my sister." I sometimes threaten Jason that we would adopt this child so he can feel the joys of having a younger brother.

Moving on to Jason, everyone who knows us knows he is an only child, the apple of our eyes. It works to his advantage in terms of not only material things but in terms of attention we bestow on him. I am his personal driver and chaperone. However, it also works to his disadvantage because his every move gets monitored, there are no other kids that take away our focus from his life, and believe me, there are days when hates my delving into his business.

Almost every major decision we reach as a family has been made with his best interests in mind. He is certainly the center of our universe, the sun by which we revolve. It is a huge responsibility for a 14-year old but he is equal to the task. Just so you know, I give him final editing rights before I post anything that involves him and he mostly indulges me.
